Ileostomy Frustrations

In our opinion an ileostomy is the coolest surgery and invention since the beginning of time!  That being said these things can straight up suck sometimes.

Not many people will ever fully understand all the details, planning, responsibility and frustrations that can come with an ostomy.

Just yesterday Ryan said to me, "Right now, I don't love this thing.  It's kind of annoying right now."

Amen!

Usually our posts have a little more pizazz and help to them but let's be honest, that's not always real life!

So just know that you are NOT alone in your ostomy frustrations if...

-you itch like crazy after a change!

-your bag has just fallen right off before
-finding the right appliance has been worse than shopping for an X-Box on Christmas Eve
-the dreaded 2 a.m. change has occurred more than once in a week
-store owners sometimes skeptically wonder if you're shoplifting because your bag is inflated
-your ostomy farts when it wants, where it wants, as loud as it wants
-you always have to have an extra change of equipment and needed supplies with you
-showering fully naked is a real and true treat
-you know the frustration of air gaps under your appliance and the itch that comes with it
-certain foods are off limits, bummer...
-output during an appliance on is public enemy #1 in your mind
-that moment when you realize your allergic to the medical equipment you finally got comfortable using
-you have a hag hanging off of you all the time

Any others we're forgetting?  Comment below so we can laugh with you but know how truly difficult the management of this can be.  You're not alone!

So let's be clear:  the ileostomy saved Ryan's life and we're grateful but they just aren't very fun all the time.  Let's continue navigating it together.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

James 1:2-3

With JOY,

Ryan & Carly
